This shelter on Mark Orel St. was established and by Aaron Menczer, a young man with no formal education, a committed Zionist who stayed in Vienna while all other leaders of the youth movements fled, following the Kristalnacht. Adolph Eichmann encouraged the immigration of the children living in the shelter.
He visited the place often, showing interest in their activities. Rabbi Benjamin Murmelstein, who acted as the head of the Jewish Committee in Vienna, recalls Eichmanns' enthusiasm for the immigration; "not Banal," he states, "but a cruel corrupt man." These Viennese children, now in their late 80s, remember well their neighbors, "the silent majority," who stood by and watched. Aaron Menczer succeeded in saving the lives of many Jewish children. Not his own. He was sent to Theresienstadt and later on with a group of over 1000 Polish children to Auschwitz, where they all perished.

Orna Porat, now a leading theater actress in Israel, was born in Germany as a Non-Jew, dreamed, as a child, of becoming a pastor, was a member of the Hitler Youth brigade and later enlisted to the German army. A traumatic revelation confronted her with the horror of the Holocaust. At the end of World War II she fell in love with an Israeli who served in the British Intelligence and moved with him to Israel, there she converted to Judaism, raised a family and embarked on a Theatrical career which later made her an Israel Prize laureate.
In September 2001, Orna Porat and film maker, Yitzhak Rubin were invited to Cologne Film Festival for the screening of Rubin's film "White Lies" in which Porat plays a Holocaust survivor, a character based on the life of Rubin's mother. In Cologne, Porat's birthplace, Yitzhak Rubin embarks on a fascinating voyage into his actress's extraordinary life story.
